e Welcoming Communities Initiative, with the support of the Grey Bruce Inclusive Communities Committee, is holding an open community meeting on Tuesday April 21st at 7:00 pm at the Ginger Press, 848 2nd Ave. East in Owen Sound.
"We've had two very successful Forums that brought people together to look at what is needed to make Grey Bruce a region that welcomes and supports newcomers, and now it is the time to move forward with the recommendations," said Joan Irvine, a member of the initiative.
Across Ontario many communities accessed federal and provincial funding to assess newcomer needs, build strategies to attract and retain newcomers, and invest in services and regional coordination. Although that funding window has now closed, the need for action in Grey Bruce is more important than ever to make our region competitive. We need to bring investments, businesses, young
people, new immigrants and diverse newcomers to the area, and the Welcoming Communities approach has proven success. Strategic plans at Grey County and the City of Owen Sound recognize the importance of bring newcomers to the area to offset our declining and aging population.

Local farmers and food producers want to supply you with the best of their best. Their challenge is to create a system that brings you what you want to eat in a way that is sustainable and fair to both producers and eaters.
To this end, you are being invited to participate in a survey about your family's likes, needs and patterns in food shopping and cooking. Where do you buy your food? What do you consider in making your choices? How interested are you in prepared foods? The Grey Bruce Centre for Agro-ecology, a farm-based co-operative, will use the community's answers to create an on-line ordering system that will bring local food right to your neighbourhood, maybe even right to your door. Fresh, convenient, packaged to suit your household at competitive prices – that is the goal. From veggies and baking to coffee, pantry staples and prepared meals, the local grocery distribution system can provide a wide variety of food options.
Your answers to the survey linked here will help local producers provide the right mix for our Grey-Bruce eaters. All the submissions will be confidential, but you will have the option to sign up for updates as the distribution project unfolds toward a launch as early as this fall.
There is only one organization in Bruce and Grey brave enough to invite 350 teens to spend from midnight until 7:30 am watching movies and eating bottomless pop and popcorn....to raise funds for children and youth projects....that organization is the United Way of Bruce Grey!

Most of us do not face life threatening situations on a daily basis, but we all feel fear. What are you afraid of?
For some of us, there are social situations that make our chest constrict. Standing in front of a crowd to speak makes our legs shake. We have to go to a party alone, will have to mingle with a crowd of strangers, and we break into a cold sweat. We avoid the friend who lost a loved one because we are afraid of saying the wrong thing.
Sometimes we are afraid of failure. We may over prepare, put in hours of extra work to get it right. Or we are so afraid of failing that we do not try. At times, we are afraid the world is failing, that peace is impossible and climate change is bringing inevitable disaster. We are afraid our life is headed for a crash. We are afraid our child is climbing into real trouble.
Whatever we are afraid of, fear shuts us down. We close our eyes so we don't have to see trouble coming. We close our hands so we do not have to touch the task we cannot handle. We put our hands over our ears and close our minds. Fear shuts us away from other people and from ourselves.
