buttbucketOkay – the Butt Blitz started April 1 across Canada and so far in Owen Sound we have had a snowstorm with blowing winds, a torrential thunderstorm, more high winds, another snowstorm, more rain and a holiday weekend (with a little snow).

So when I got back to town this evening, I headed off with my trusty bucket and picker for the harbour.

As I stood looking toward the sun low in the sky and felt the wind in my face, I realized that all those cigarette butts were headed to the water – down the drain or over the harbour wall.

I know some folks are collecting on their own, so we already have a headstart, but it's time to get down to some serious buttpicking and it looks like this might be the perfect week for it. No boots, no parkas, no raincoats – in fact, you'll need a sunhat and some sunscreen!

Here are nine chances to join some fellow blitzers over the next few days. Just an hour together can make a big difference!

We always welcome suggestions for butt picking locations. Everything we collect will be sent to Terracycle for recycling.

Please bring a bucket, gloves and a picker if you have one. If you just want to pick litter, we'll be happy to have you with us. Pickers must be 19 or older, or bring a parent to sign the waiver.

Thanks to all who pick and those who cheer us on.

For more information, or if you have butts for us to collect from you, contact me through Messenger or annekfs@gmail.com.
