Artists – and their sun-shading strategies – were out in the open this weekend as Owen Sound's ArtWalk 2023 spread out over the downtown core Saturday, June 24.

More than a dozen galleries and businesses took part in the annual self-guided tour on a blazingly warm summer's day, presenting unique challenges to the outdoors painters with their paints drying too fast and their eyes struggling with the very bright sunlight.

Painters Wilhelmina Cavan, top, of Guelph, and Aggie McCormack, from Sauble Beach, find their morning shade exchanged for the heat of a glaring noon hour sun along 1st Avenue East.

The how'd-they-do-that factor is high at Intersections Wood Collaborative. Solid technical skills meet mature artistic vision to produce these sensuous wood turnings by Carl Durance, light and dark bowl below, and Stephen Hogbin, top and bottoms.

Dilara Senum, a talented young painter from Collingwood, shows some brush control technique before breaking for a lunch that included one of her favourites – watermelon.

Collingwood's Jane Schnurr breaks out the stripes to coordinate some shade from the sun.

Jason Alexander, also of the Collingwood contingent, came prepared to document his work documenting historical buildings along 10th Street East during the annual Owen Sound ArtWalk.

Owen Sound artist Herbert Pryke continues his series of bright colourful back alley paintings, his refreshing take on the Scenic City, below, and brings along a bag of his Bay work as well.
